Things to Do in Maroochydore with Friends: A Different Kind of Weekend

Planning a weekend with friends on the Sunshine Coast should be easy, but getting everyone to agree on an activity can be surprisingly difficult. Someone wants to be outdoors, someone else wants a good brunch, and there's usually at least one person who would rather not spend half the day driving.

Maroochydore is a good place to bring those ideas together. You can start with something a little different, spend time around the river and Cotton Tree, then keep the rest of the day as relaxed as you like.

Start with puppy yoga at The Station Pilates

We run our Sunshine Coast puppy yoga sessions at The Station Pilates, 11 Beach Road, Maroochydore. The hour combines beginner-friendly floor yoga, supervised puppy playtime and a quieter closing period. It's accessible to friends with different levels of yoga experience, including people who have never taken a class.

The yoga gives you a shared activity before the usual coffee or lunch. And if your group is normally quite competitive, this is one outing where the puppies are unlikely to award points for the best balance.

Our dates and times can vary, so check the Sunshine Coast puppy yoga schedule before arranging the rest of the day. There's no need to build a complicated itinerary around a session that hasn't been booked yet.

Coffee, cafés and a wander around Cotton Tree

After the class, consider Cotton Tree. The streets around King Street have cafés and small shops, while the riverfront makes a pleasant setting for a slower catch-up.

Pick a café that suits the group, enjoy a proper conversation and leave time to browse. It's a more flexible plan than trying to rush everyone through several separate bookings, particularly when people have travelled from different parts of the Sunshine Coast.

Spend some time beside the Maroochy River

Cotton Tree Park sits beside the Maroochy River and has shaded areas, picnic facilities and connecting walking paths. A wander through the park and along the water is an easy way to keep the afternoon going without committing to an energetic hike.

If you're in the mood for a more active outing, the river and sheltered waters around Cotton Tree are known for paddling. Check current conditions and any operator requirements first.

There's also the nearby Maroochydore beachfront and a coastal path towards Alexandra Headland. If swimming is on the agenda, use patrolled areas and pay attention to local beach safety advice.

Keep a wet-weather option in reserve

Sunshine Plaza is a useful alternative when the forecast changes or the group has mixed interests. It brings together shops, dining and entertainment around its Riverwalk precinct. You can give people time to wander rather than expecting everyone to share exactly the same taste in shops.

For an evening catch-up, Ocean Street offers a different atmosphere, with restaurants and other places to eat and drink. Check individual trading hours or make a booking where appropriate.

A good day doesn't need a long checklist

Our preferred version of this outing is simple: puppy yoga, a meal you aren't rushing through and a little time outside if the weather cooperates. You can add more, but you don't have to.

When you're ready to plan the first part, have a look at our Maroochydore puppy yoga sessions. Pick a date that works for the group, then leave enough space in the day to actually enjoy being together.
